Quilts, Blocks and mayhem

While it is still the calm before the storm, or I should say Cyclone Ita, I thought I would share some of the latest quilt happenings.

My third sister, Anne, has been having a very rough time healthwise of late so I made a quilt to celebrate her 70th birthday.  It is often difficult choosing colours for other people so I opted for somthing bright and cheerful and was pleased to hear from her and her daughter how delighted she was with her present.

Meanwhile I am still keeping on track with Barbara's Brackman's BOM "Threads of Memory" and here is Block 3.  The next temptation is to start on her Jane Austen Album quilt.

Pauline has now layered her version of my "Night Owl" quilt and I am looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.

Currently it is still calm outside the studio with just the odd shower of rain and I am now just waiting for Peter to come home and batten down the courtyard and outside areas.  If "Ita" stays on track it will just be a bumpy night but we are keeping our eye on the hourly updates from the Bureau of Metereology.

I hope the after effects of Ita were not too disruptive for you. (We flew out at 8.30pm!) I love the quilt for your sister- such pretty colours!

Hope Ita doesn't cause Cairns too much damage. Wishing you well. The quilt will be sure to brighten your sister's days - beautiful.

Great quilt for your sister and I do like the BB block also. I know that Ita was down graded but it can still cause damage. Hope you are all okay.

Nice job on your sisters quilt....
I am also a big Brackman fan, although I do not quilt she is a terrific historical source. Always so readable.
I was in NZ last month and we caught the tail end of cyclone Luci.....quite dramatic.

Well its been a while but I have been inspired to post after seeing my quilt "In a Pretty Pickle" on the cover of the latest "Homespun" magazine https://www.facebook.com/frances.leate with the full project instructions featured inside with a brief profile about me.  This quilt was machine pieced and quilted on my Bernina domestic machine. Blogger's Quilt Festival

  Its that time of year again when Amy over at Amy's Creative Side  is organising an online quilt festival so I thought I would add my quilt "Concerto for Mixed Peel" to the all the fun.     "Concerto for Mixed Peel" by Frances Leate This quilt is approximately 78" square and has been created using the Orange Peel block in three different sizes.  The blocks were hand appliqued using the fusible method with blanket stitch.  I chose this method of applique as I needed a very portable project at the time and this proved to be just the thing.  I  quilted "Concerto for Mixed Peel" on my Bernina 440 machine in a simple style and then added the scalloped edging.  It was commissioned by Australian Homespun magazine and the brief was for a quilt using the orange peel block, thirties style fabrics and to be bright and fresh in colour.  The project was published in Homespun No. 105 Vol 13 No 2.     Till next t...

Civil War Blocks

I have finally caught up with my blocks for the Civil War Quilt and here are blocks 37 to 45.  These blocks have been pieced by hand and machine and there is also some needleturn applique. Here is a quick photo of all the blocks lined up together on my small design wall.  With only 8 blocks to go it is time to start thinking about how to set them all and Barbara Brackman has some great ideas over at Civil War Quilts  .  At the moment I am think of straight sashing with cornerstones but I have been known to change my mind (at least once or twice).  I have really enjoyed being part of this stitchalong project.
