Civil War Quilt Blocks

I put Block16 - "White House" - together earlier which means I am now up todate with this project.  It was a lot of fun playing with these blocks today and having a look at them up on the design wall.  I have used lots of different fabrics although so far I have kept to my original colour scheme of teal, red, brown and creams/beiges.

Earlier in the week I made Block 15 "Fort Sumter" - a great block -

and today I worked on "White House".  I made a slight change in the method of construction as I decided to avoid the challenge of aligning the stripes which would happen if I cut a square and then a separate triangle as shown in Barbara Brackman's pattern.  Instead, I cut a rectangle from my border print fabric and then placed a light square on the end, sewed across the diagonal and then flipped back the corner to make a triangle.  This method was very easy and worked a treat.

There has also been lots of blanket stitching happening here and the "orts" in my jar are growing.

Very smart to modify that block! It looks great as does all the blocks together on your design wall. What are "orts"?

The blocks all have something special in their own right don't they. The Fort Sumter block has very strong design lines to it. I am sure you'll put it all together in a very pleasing manner. I really love the strong, slightly murky colours.

I like the fabrics you've chosen, and congrat's for being caught up. I fear I have a little way to go. One of these weeks I'll have a furious catch-up session and be back on track.

I thought about making the White House block as you did, rather than trying to match cuts of stripes. I'm sure I'll follow your lead in the furious catch-up session mentioned above.

What's your definition of orts? I have a blogging friend whose blog is "Annie's Quilt Orts," so your note about the threads in your jar caught my attention.

Blogger's Quilt Festival

  Its that time of year again when Amy over at Amy's Creative Side  is organising an online quilt festival so I thought I would add my quilt "Concerto for Mixed Peel" to the all the fun.     "Concerto for Mixed Peel" by Frances Leate This quilt is approximately 78" square and has been created using the Orange Peel block in three different sizes.  The blocks were hand appliqued using the fusible method with blanket stitch.  I chose this method of applique as I needed a very portable project at the time and this proved to be just the thing.  I  quilted "Concerto for Mixed Peel" on my Bernina 440 machine in a simple style and then added the scalloped edging.  It was commissioned by Australian Homespun magazine and the brief was for a quilt using the orange peel block, thirties style fabrics and to be bright and fresh in colour.  The project was published in Homespun No. 105 Vol 13 No 2.     Till next t...

Civil War Blocks

I have finally caught up with my blocks for the Civil War Quilt and here are blocks 37 to 45.  These blocks have been pieced by hand and machine and there is also some needleturn applique. Here is a quick photo of all the blocks lined up together on my small design wall.  With only 8 blocks to go it is time to start thinking about how to set them all and Barbara Brackman has some great ideas over at Civil War Quilts  .  At the moment I am think of straight sashing with cornerstones but I have been known to change my mind (at least once or twice).  I have really enjoyed being part of this stitchalong project.
